Steve Neale - Genre Theory

Steve Neale suggests that genres are examples of repetition and difference meaning that all types of genre are similar and follow the same forms and conventions however to make them a specific genre difference is essential because insignificant repetition would not attract an audience. The genre can be differentiated by adding a sub genre or a significant difference in the narrative.

Steve Neale’s theory makes some valid points for example in a specific genre difference is essential this is because it makes the music, film or text different allowing the audience to engage with it and want to view it, if every genre was the same no one would want to watch new things as they would be exactly the same. Although this theory is very important implying this theory to my work will be very hard due to having to make my music video different to every other pop genre by adding other forms and conventions however I have an idea on how I want to do this. The pop genre is what I wanted to do in my music video so to make my music video different to every other pop genre I am going to have it throwing back to the 80’s this gives the audience a reason to listen and watch the video as it is offering something else that other pop music videos don’t.
